ABRAHAM BRUEGHEL (1631-1697) TRA MESSINA E NAPOLI: ALCUNE RIFLESSIONI E PRECISAZIONI

Questo scritto intende proporre un’inedita riflessione sul ruolo sostenuto dal pittore fiammingo di nature morte Abraham Brueghel (Anversa 1631-Napoli 1697) nei suoi vari soggiorni meridionali, almeno un paio a Messina, presso Don Antonio Ruffo, e una lunga permanenza a Napoli dal 1675 circa fino alla morte, avvenuta nel 1697. Alcuni studiosi, a partire da Charles Sterling, avevano negato o ridimensionato l’importanza che il pittore anversano ha avuto sui protagonisti dell’ultima fase del ‘secolo d’oro’ della natura morta napoletana, che invece va ribadita con forza, come dimostrano anche i confronti qui proposti con opere di Francesco della Questa e Andrea Belvedere.
This writing intends to propose an unprecedented reflection on the role played by the Flemish still life painter Abraham Brueghel (Antwerp 1631-Naples 1697) in his various southern stays, at least a couple in Messina, with Don Antonio Ruffo, and a long stay in Naples from about 1675 until his death in 1697. Some scholars, starting with Charles Sterling, had denied or reduced the importance that the Antwerp painter had on the protagonists of the last phase of the ‘Golden Century’ of Neapolitan still life, which instead it must be strongly reiterated, as the comparisons proposed here with works by Francesco della Questa and Andrea Belvedere also demonstrate.
